PROBLEM
The UK is facing a persistent digital skills gap that affects both individuals and employers.
This digital divide makes it harder for many adults to find good jobs, access services, and take part fully in modern life. Studies also suggest that without action, digital exclusion could become one of the UK’s largest skills gaps by 2030
- Around 21 million working‑age adults are unable to perform all basic digital tasks needed for work, indicating a wide gap in essential workplace digital skills.(futuredotnow.uk)
- An estimated 8.5 million adults lack basic digital skills altogether, meaning they struggle with fundamental digital tasks. (goodthingsfoundation.org)
- Around 1.6 million people are currently offline or lack access to devices and connectivity needed for digital learning and work.(gov.uk)
CHALLENGES
The UK faces several persistent barriers:
- Limited Digital Training – Many adults and workers still don’t receive training that keeps pace with technological change.
- Workforce Skills Mismatch – Employers report ongoing difficulty finding workers with the right digital and data skills.
- Socio‑Economic Barriers – Those on lower incomes, older adults, and people living offline often have fewer opportunities to learn digital skills and benefit from them.
Together, we can make digital skills a reality for everyone, building stronger careers, stronger communities, and a more inclusive UK economy.
